    Description

Extremely rare and significant original cabinet photo of W.K. Vanderbilt and his 90 HP Mercedes just moments after breaking the speed record at Ormond Beach on January 27, 1904. Please see supporting newspaper photos provided with this listing, showing the same scene after the record was broken. All details match, from the car (i.e. cinch loop in leather hood strap) to some of the same onlookers in the scene, etc.
Soon after Ormond, Vanderbilt would establish the first Vanderbilt Cup race on Long Island, NY.
The cabinet is signed "Pierson, NY". Research suggests this is likely Walter G. Pierson, who in the late 19th to early 20th century was a publisher of automobile magazines, an officer of the Long Island Automobile Club, and president of the New York Amateur Photographers Society.
The photograph and mount are in excellent condition. The photo has excellent clarity and contrast, with some silvering in the blacks. Minor edge wear. Ink notation on the reverse.
Size: Cabinet mount is 8" x 10" and the actual photograph is 4-5/8" x 5-3/8"
Truly one of the more significant photographs extant pertaining to early automobile racing.
